The National Curriculum Spelling Appendix sets out the spelling patterns to be taught in each year group. If you would like to view the spelling patterns, please see the appendix. We teach these patterns, across the year, within our daily phonics and writing. In addition to these, the children also need to learn to read and spell common exception words (we call them “tricky words”). Therefore, we feel it is beneficial to focus on a small selection of words per week, to build our own mental spelling banks.
The children will be given a weekly practice sheet to complete at home, in addition to the practice sheet they will complete during their daily morning challenge. The purpose of this is not to achieve a spelling score on a test, but to develop a secure knowledge and understanding of each spelling in order to accurately apply these words within their independent work. The spelling schedule is attached below.
